Why is it hazy in Colorado Springs today?

Three things can make Colorado Springs’s sky look worse than the number reads. The AQI is a 24-hour average, so one bad hour gets diluted across twenty-three calmer ones. What is causing the bad air in Colorado Springs?

Colorado Springs sits about 60 miles south of Denver on the same Front Range corridor, and it shares Denver’s dominant summer pollutant: ground-level ozone. Colorado’s state monitoring network, the same one that reports Denver’s numbers, runs a station here too, logged under the code ACAD. On August 14, 2026, colorado.gov’s own detailed air quality summary listed Colorado Springs at 80, with an ozone reading of 64 parts per billion. Denver’s own reading sat at 84 that same day. Ozone doesn’t respect a county line. The Front Range’s oil-and-gas basin and vehicle traffic feed a regional pollutant, and Colorado Springs sits downwind of Denver’s share of it as often as it produces its own.

Winter can bring a version of Denver’s brown cloud too — a temperature inversion trapping cool, dense fine-particulate air, PM2.5, against the base of the mountains. Windy days off the plains east of the city can also raise coarse PM10 dust, a different particulate matter mechanism than the inversion’s fine PM2.5. We haven’t found Colorado Springs-specific community reporting to confirm how often or how visibly either pattern happens here. Unlike Denver, this city has almost no local forum discussion of its own air in what we could find. That gap is worth stating plainly rather than papering over with borrowed Denver color.

Is the air safe to breathe in Colorado Springs today?

Colorado Springs shares a single Front Range ozone alert with Denver and Fort Collins. One regional call can cover all three cities on a day when only one of them actually looks hazy — which is exactly why the local number, not the regional one, should decide the outing. Go on a normal reading. Short and unloaded: a shorter loop at Garden of the Gods instead of the full trail. Don’t go once the color turns red. EPA’s everyone-warning begins at 151, Unhealthy. 201 through 300, Very Unhealthy, repeats that warning at a more serious level, not a different group. Past roughly 200, the plan moves indoors regardless of what the corridor alert said this morning.

What AQI should you stay inside?

No statewide Colorado rule sets an AQI cutoff for schools or daycares, at least nothing this project has confirmed. Washington and Minnesota are the exceptions, both with a documented figure. The states that name a number, and the ones that don’t has the list. Ask your provider for the written version.

Ozone along the Front Range shifts personal thresholds the same direction smoke does elsewhere, and the numbers people actually use sit well under the EPA’s single sensitive-groups line regardless. On r/Marathon_Training, a runner named a figure: “I’ll run in up to 110 because…error bars.” An asthmatic runner logged 156 runs against AQI instead and set a lower ceiling, 60 — “my lungs struggle regardless of how well I’ve trained,” even though EPA calls nothing under 100 unhealthy. Their log: 87% of runs under 50 went fine, 42% between 50 and 70, just 12% past 70. Parents online land closer to 100.

Wildfire smoke, when it reaches the corridor, shifts that table down further still — about one EPA band. EPA’s band reads 101–150, Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups — their term, not a judgment on any one set of lungs. Indoors, default to a portable HEPA purifier or a Corsi-Rosenthal box; one builder priced a 12x14 bedroom’s worth at $130. Why our number may not match what you are seeing and smelling

Ground-level ozone is invisible and odorless wherever it forms, Colorado Springs included. On a clear, still summer afternoon the reading can run higher than the sky suggests. The same gap shows up in Denver, Phoenix and Los Angeles. There’s no smelling your way to a safe read on it.

The reverse also happens. Smoke drifting down from a fire well outside the metro can sit aloft, visible against the mountains. The ground-level monitor can read a lower number than the sky suggests, because the smoke hasn’t mixed down to where the sensor sits yet. Both directions come from the same 24-hour-average, one-station design, not from the pollutant behaving strangely.

Colorado’s own state grid names a Colorado Springs station, ACAD, on its public summary page. We haven’t independently verified that code’s exact siting, or how far it sits from any given neighborhood. A station miles off under-reports whichever side of the metro sits farthest from it.
